North Catty discusses consolidation of voting wards

At the July 6 North Catasauqua Borough Council meeting, council President Peter Paone initiated a discussion on the consolidation of voting wards.

This topic has been discussed much since voting ceased at the Slovak Center Social Club, 1233 Fifth St. The reason voting stopped at this location is because there were no handicapped-accessible parking spots.

At this meeting, only discussion took place. In order for a consolidation of the two current wards, the solicitor would have to draft an ordinance, and it would have to be advertised. If approved by council, the ordinance would then have to be approved by the Northampton County Board of Elections.

It is doubtful this whole process would be completed before the November election, if council would decide to proceed with consolidation.

Also at the meeting, council made its final approval for Pivot Energy’s solar facility. There are still some administrative conditions that need to be met and signed off with the solicitor.

The location is Breinigs Lane, and “it’s airport property that they’re leasing,” Tasha Jandrisovits said after the meeting.

During the fire, Civil Service Commission and operations report, Roger Scheirer shared statistics on fire department response times. He also mentioned that, during a recent committee meeting, there was discussion about potentially changing the maximum radius requirement for North Catasauqua Police Department officers.

Currently, officers have to live within a 10-mile radius. Council could vote on changing this, allowing officers to live farther away from the borough.

Police Chief Christopher Wolfer brought up a concern regarding residents using the driveway of North Catasauqua William J. Albert Memorial Park, 701 Grove St., as a regular parking spot instead of using it as the intended drop-off/pickup location.

During the mayor’s report, William J. Molchany Jr. thanked the volunteers for and attendees at the J4 Celebration, which was held July 4 at various locations in Catasauqua Borough. He added organizers were happy to have gotten the fireworks in.

Solicitor Stephanie Steward had two standard operating procedures for review: workplace safety and borough equipment and vehicles. Steward provided council a first draft for members to read and discuss at an upcoming meeting. Approval could occur at the next meeting if no objections follow.

Council will next meet 7 p.m. Aug. 3 at the municipal building, 1066 Fourth St.
