At The Movies: “Scary” funny

What is really scary about “Scary Movie” is the humor.

The humor is silly, sophomoric and stupid.

What’s even more scary is how often I laughed at the terrible one-liners, ridiculous sight gags and funny if distasteful jokes in “Scary Movie.”

“Scary Movie” pokes fun at nearly everyone and everything.

No-holds-barred comedy can be a catharsis. I was still chuckling and smiling after I left the movie theater.

Although it lacks a number, as with its predecessors, this is the sixth “Scary Movie.”

The first “Scary Movie” was released in 2000. There was “Scary Movie 2,” 2001; “Scary Movie 3,” 2003; “Scary Movie 4,” 2006, and “Scary Movie 5,” 2013.

The “Scary Movie” franchise makes fun of, well, scary moves. “Scream,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” “Sinners,” “KPop Demon Hunters,” “The Substance,” “Smile,” “M3GAN”and the genres of science-fiction, paranormal, extraterrestrial and alien films are parodied in the sixth installment.

There’s a lot to spoof in the horror movie genre, which dominated the June 5 to June 7 weekend domestic movie box office when the top movies included “Scary Movie,” at No. 1; and the horror movies, “Backrooms,” at No. 3, and “Obsession,” at No. 4.

“Scary Movie” opened at No. 1 with $54.3 million, nearly double that of “Masters of the Universe,” which opened at No. 2 with $29.4 million.

The latest “Scary Movie” sends up the “Scary Movie” franchise with references to its characters and to devising a plot, never a strong point for the “Scary Movie” franchise.

“Scary Movie 6” brings back the Wayans, who started the franchise and were in “Scary Movie 1 and 2,” but not “Scary Movie 3, 4 and 5.”

Keenan Ivory Wayans directed the first “Scary Movie.”

Micheal Tiddes (director: “Half-Baked: Totally High,” 2024; “A Haunted House 2,” 2014; “A Haunted House,” 2013) directs “Scary Movie 6.”

Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans and Craig Wayans wrote the screenplay, along with Rick Alvarez, for “Scary Movie 6.”

Marlon Wayans is back on screen as Shorty Meeks. Also in the film: Shawn Wayans as Ray Wilkins, Gregg Wayans as Brad Meeks, Kim Wayans as Nurse Ratchett, and Damon Wayans Jr. as Agent Underwood.

Anna Faris is back as Cindy Campbell, as is Regina Hall as Brenda Meeks. “Scary Movie 5” was the only “Scary Movie” that Faris and Meeks were not in.

Marlon Wayans is his usual over-the-top hilarious. Anna Faris is quite comedic as Cindy. Regina Hall plays it straight as Brenda and is all the more funny.

Olivia Rose Keegan is totally silly as Sara. Savannah Lee Nassif is a hoot as Tuesday. Sydney Park is memorable as DEI.

Dave Sheridan is noteworthy as Doofy. Kim Wayans is very funny as Nurse Ratchett.

Cheri Oteri is Gail Hailstorm. Chris Elliott is Shorthand. Cameron Scott Roberts is Jack, Sara’s boyfriend.

Cameos include those by Teyana Taylor, Carmen Electra, Kenan Thompson, Felissa Rose, Anthony Anderson, Heidi Gardner and Shaquille O’Neal.

The humor in “Scary Movie” is hit or miss and is often a miss. No matter, the film speeds on blissfully.

You can bet the raunch on “Scary Movie.”

To paraphrase “Forest Gump”: stupid comedy is as stupid comedy does.

“Scary Movie” is nothing if not stupid comedy.
