Salisbury softball clinches playoff spot

The Salisbury softball team’s recent four-game win streak has put it at the 10-win mark for the season to guarantee a spot in the District 11 playoffs. It’s the first time since 2021 that Salisbury has earned a spot in the postseason.

The win that put them over the top was a 6-4 win over Saucon Valley Friday.

The two teams have played a pair of good games this season. The Panthers won the first game 3-2 before Salisbury won the second game.

Leadoff hitter Sophia Gunning got the game started with a solo inside-the-park home run and later in the inning Jenna Swoyer doubled to drive in two runs. Brinlee Neitz singled to give Salisbury a four-run fourth inning.

The Falcons showed patience at the plate and speed on the basepaths as they worked five walks and stole five bases in the game. Alaina Pavolko stole two of the five bases.

Tessa Kemmerer threw a complete game to get the win.

Kemmerer also got the start and threw a complete game in a 4-3 win over Notre Dame of Green Pond earlier in the week. At the plate, the junior drove in two runs with her third home run of the season.

Again, the Falcons got help from a quick start when they put up the game’s first run in the first inning on a double by Julia Carney that scored Gianna Olds, who had delivered a one-out single. Taylor Wagner, Olds and Carney all collected two hits in the game.

Carney had a big week at the plate, hitting .545 (6-11) with three runs scored and six RBI, five of which came in a 16-6 win over Wilson. The game was shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule after Salisbury put up six runs in the fifth to pull away from a Wilson team that kept battling back throughout the game.

“We’re playing really well and it feels good to keep winning like we have been,” said Carney. “We all pull together and we’re having a lot of fun. To be honest, it’s a little scary because teams know how good we are and I think they play harder against us now. We just have to play even harder, too.”

Swoyer and Kemmerer split time in the circle to beat the Warriors. Swoyer started and threw the first two innings with Kemmerer coming on to pitch the final three innings.

“I actually like pitching against teams that keep battling like they did today,” said Swoyer. “They didn’t let up even when we got a few runs and that makes it interesting. It was a good game, but our offense was able to get it done today.”

Every time Salisbury put up runs, Wilson came back with runs in the next inning to keep it close until the Falcons exploded in the fifth.

The Falcons led 10-3 after three innings, but Wilson scored three times in the top of the fourth to fight their way back.

“You have to hand it to (Wilson) because they’ve had a rough season and they really fought today to get this one,” said Salisbury head coach Brian Fehnel. “They kept themselves in the game until we were able to put together that big inning against them.”

A rematch against Palmerton (13-2 overall, 11-2 Colonial), who took its first loss of the season when it played Salisbury earlier in the season, was postponed until May 4, which makes it the season finale on the regular season schedule. The Falcons (10-6, 8-6) also have games at Southern Lehigh (11-5, 9-4) and Catasauqua (3-12, 0-12) before they host Palisades (6-8, 6-7).
