Lozada wins two D-11 events

Steven Lozada has captured plenty of track and field medals over his career. He displays them on his bedroom wall among a Salisbury team MVP display, with the hopes of adding a few more before his high school career wraps up this weekend.

The Falcon senior added three medals to his collection during last week’s District 11 Class 2A Track and Field Championships at Whitehall High School.

Lozada won the pole vault and triple jump events, while placing third in the long jump. He qualified for states in all three events.

“I’m just trying to soak it all in,” Lozada said after the first day of competition. “Tomorrow [last Wednesday] is the last time I compete here, which is crazy to think about four years ago. Just trying to soak it all in and do my best. Put on a show for my family and teammates that came to support me.”

Lozada certainly put on a show despite another uncharacteristic crowd on Tuesday for the pole vault event. Inclement weather forced the event to early afternoon before the rest of the meet was set to begin.

He cleared 13 feet, 6 inches on his first jump, which was more than enough to pick up gold in the pole vault.

“Last week was definitely abnormal,” Lozada said. “Today, when I started jumping, that’s when everyone started to come through to place their tents, and people were walking by. There was some energy, which I love, so I was able to feed off that a little bit.

“I’m glad I hit the jump to go to states and win districts, too. But I was hoping for more. I just couldn’t find the right spot with the pole. I was blowing through it on the 14-6 bar.”

Also on the first day of competition, Lozada tied a personal-best jump of 22 feet, 1/2 inches in the long jump, which earned him a bronze medal in the event. He was less than two inches from second place.

“I tied my personal best today in the long jump, so it was some good jumps,” Lozada said. “The kid beat me for second place by an inch and a half, so it was close. Matching a PR is good, so I’ll take it. I qualified for states.”

Lozada also qualified for states in the triple jump and won the event at districts convincingly with a jump of 45 feet, 2 inches on Wednesday afternoon. He improved on his second-place finish in the event at last year’s district meet.

“I was expecting it to be some circling winds, but it ended up being pretty calm,” Lozada said. “My hips weren’t feeling great today, so I was just happy with that…Knowing that there’s a little gap between where I’m at and second place feels good, but I still want to perform to my best and set a personal record.”

Considering Lozada just started competing in the jumping events as a sophomore, he’ll certainly take a return trip to Shippensburg where he looks to capture a few more state hardware for his collection. He’s coming off last year’s third-place mark in the pole vault at states, and he’s not worried about the pressure getting to him.

“I think just knowing that success came last time and it can come again,” Lozada said. “I’m better than I was last year. If I just perform the way I know I can and am capable of, I think I feel pretty confident.”

Jamanni Cruz earned medals in both of his main events: 100- and 200-meter dashes. The Falcon senior placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.28 seconds, while also capturing fourth place in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.73 seconds.

Rounding out the Falcons’ top-10 finishers at districts were: Owen Zambelli (seventh in pole vault), Dominic Natosi (ninth in 400-meter dash), Griffin Lakics (ninth in discus) and the 4x800 meter relay team.

The PIAA Class 2A Track and Field Championships are set for Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University.
