Pool, stadium track to receive upgrades

Work on the Northampton Area Middle School swimming pool and an area of the Al Erdosy Stadium track is prioritized for summer.

The swimming pool work cost estimate is $46,000 and the stadium track work cost estimate is $25,000, said NASD Director of Operations Jonathan Jenny, who chaired the approximate one-hour May 18 meeting of Northampton Area School District Board of Education facilities committee in the Northampton Area High School library conference room.

The swimming pool involves routine maintenance that is done every three years, Jenny said, adding, “Every three years, we acid-wash.”

The inside of the pool, after the approximate 500,000 gallons of water is drained, would be acid-washed and power-washed, with re-grouting of tiles, if necessary. The work, planned for mid-July, is estimated to take three weeks to complete.

Repairs need to be made on the northeast corner of the visitors side of the Erdosy field track where a puddle of water was visible in a photo shown during a presentation at the meeting by Arif Fazil, senior business development leader, CHA Consulting Inc., district engineering consultant.

“There is some settling,” Fazil said, “and it extends from the track into the turf. We can’t let that go,” noting student track team athletes could be injured at the uneven area of the track. “That land is not safe to run on,” Fazil added.

Funds for the two projects may be taken from the $779,000 set aside for the Erdosy field turf replacement, which is expected to be under budget at $680,000, Jenny said.

The Erdosy Stadium turf replacement project is to begin June 8 after the last day of classes, June 4, for the 2025-26 school year. Work is to be substantially done, Aug. 3, in time for the start of football practice, with completion expected Aug. 20.

The back parking lot at the high school will be closed for the summer. It will be used as a staging area for the turf and roof projects. The baseball field will be closed this summer.

Jenny discussed new equipment for the instructional technology department as part of the closing of the Washington Technology Center, district administration building and Franklin Elementary School, all in Northampton, and Moore Elementary School, Moore Township, at the end of the 2025-26 school year and the move to East Allen Elementary School and Education Center, East Allen Township, for the start of the 2026-27 school year.

Johnson Controls software, which includes the running of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment at district schools, is being upgraded. The system will have remote-control capabilities.

The annual service contract of approximately $25,000 will increase to approximately $42,000, Jenny said.

School board Director Joshua Harris, who is on the facilities committee, questioned the increased fee.

“That’s what we’re needing to look at: Is it cost effective?” Harris asked.

The first phase of work on a portion of the roof of NAHS is to begin June 8 and be completed by Aug. 17. The school district has applied for a grant for the second phase of roof repairs. Fazil said the district is waiting for confirmation of the grant.

The school board voted Feb. 9 to authorize CHA Consulting Inc. to apply for the Public School Facility Improvement Grant program.

The school board approved proposal 1 by WTI General Contracting of $1,602,433 for a portion of NAHS roof repairs.

The school board voted to delay the approval of proposal 2 by WTI General Contracting of $1,424,951 until July 17.

Harris asked what will happen to the veterans memorial at Moore Elementary School after the school closes. Jenny said he will look into it. The memorial was an Eagle Scout project, Harris said.

The next facilities committee is scheduled for 6 p.m. June 22 in the NAHS library conference room, 1619 Laubach Ave., Northampton.
