Honoring those lost

Memorial Day ceremonies are planned across region

The end of May is a time of remembrance for the servicemen and women who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. Memorial Day is celebrated the last Monday of May. This year, that falls May 25.

A number of local veterans groups around the area will observe Memorial Day by holding services and ceremonies of remembrance.

Catasauqua

Catasauqua American Legion Post 215 will hold Memorial Day services starting 10 a.m. May 25 with the honor guard being escorted by Legion riders and traveling from the Post at 330 Second St. to Fairview Cemetery, West Catasauqua. The ceremony will continue with services on Pine Street Bridge, the memorial plot in North Catasauqua and at St. Mary’s Cemetery. The program concludes back at the Post with a final service and lunch.

American Legion Post 215 has also been working to honor veterans by placing American flags on the graves of fallen service members at Fairview Cemetery.

Whitehall

Whitehall Township will hold a joint veterans program, including American Legion Post 367, Fullerton; American Legion Jones Quigg Post 739, Hokendauqua; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7293, Egypt; and Whitehall Police Honor Guard, starting 11:30 a.m. May 25 at the municipal building, 3219 MacArthur Road.

VFW Post 7293 services will begin 9:30 a.m. May 25 at the Cementon memorial on Main Street. Participants will then travel to Egypt for a 10 a.m. service at the Doughboy statue at Park and South Church streets and a 10:30 a.m. service at the Egypt park memorial at Hillcrest Lane and Curt Simmons Drive. The day will end with a program at the VFW Post, 5209 Springmill Road, approximately 1 p.m., after the joint service at the municipal building. The guest speaker will be Rick Scherer, a retired Navy commander.

American Legion Post 367 will hold events May 25, starting 9 a.m. at Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery with a flag replacement and salute by the Fullerton Post Honor Guard. The group will then move to the World War I memorial on Park Street, Fullerton, for 9:30 a.m. There will be a service 10 a.m. at the Post, 609 Fullerton Ave. Mayor Joseph Marx will speak, and there will be a memorial service and salute honoring the veterans who have died in the last year.

Coplay

Stanley W. Reinhard Jr. American Legion Post 426, Coplay, will hold Memorial Day services at various sites in the borough. The services start noon May 24 at the Coplay Saengerbund war memorial at South Fifth and Hokendauqua streets. The ceremony will be repeated at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church cemetery, St. John’s cemetery in Stiles, the Stiles war memorial on Chestnut Street, Coplay Cemetery, the Coplay war memorial at Maple and Chestnut streets and on the Coplay-Northampton Bridge to drop a wreath into the Lehigh River to honor those lost at sea. The ceremony ends at Post 426 on South Second Street.

Northampton

Northampton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4714 will conduct memorial tributes at the gravesites of fallen comrades throughout the borough May 25. They plan to be at Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary cemetery 8:30 a.m.; St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic cemetery 9 a.m.; Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Orthodox cemetery 9:30 a.m.; and Our Lady of Hungary cemetery 10 a.m. At each cemetery, they will perform a brief ceremony that will consist of the national anthem, a prayer, a song, roll call, a rifle salute and echo taps.

In addition, Northampton Joint Veterans, consisting of American Legion Post 353, Catholic War Veterans Post 454 and VFW Post 4714, will conduct a memorial tribute for all their fallen comrades starting 11 a.m. at the veterans plaza, 14th Street and Dewey and Washington avenues.

At Allen Union Cemetery, Fourth and Main streets, there will be an outdoor ceremony held 8:30 a.m. May 25. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at Grace United Church of Christ, 902 Lincoln Ave.
