Coplay Borough Council members, at the May 12 meeting, accepted the resignation of Mayor Joseph Bundra, who submitted his letter of resignation April 14.
Health issues were cited as the mayor’s reason for leaving the position early.
Council will have 30 days to appoint a person to the mayor role. If that is unsuccessful, the issue will be moved to Lehigh County, whose officials will make an appointment.
Interviews for the position of Coplay Borough mayor are expected to take place during council’s meeting June 2. The person then approved by council is expected to assume the role during the regular meeting June 9.
At the May 12 meeting, Councilman Rick Kern was named interim mayor. Councilman Todd Santoroski was named pro tem president, and Councilman Lou Bodish was named pro tem vice president.
After those appointments were made, council moved on to the business items on the agenda.
Alan Kunsman was approved to replace the snack stand roof at a cost of $33,650. Funds from a Keystone grant, in the amount of $18,641.83, will be applied to that cost. The funding was originally given for lights at Balliet Stadium, so a change of scope request was required.
Council also approved paying the remaining balance for the roof replacement — a total of $15,008.17.
Santoroski and Tiffany Benson, secretary-treasurer, were approved to execute documents needed for a Greenways Trails and Recreation grant. The money will be used to repave the Coplay portion of the Ironton Rail Trail.
Keycodes was appointed a third-party inspector for electrical, mechanical, plumbing and commercial permits.
Brogan Emery, Jayden Geiger, Luke Makoul, Zachary Kresge, Elijah Fox, Logan Lemak, Kacee Medei and Josiah Hippert were approved as lifeguards at the borough’s Parkway Pool. Alyssa Miller and Sophie Andre were approved as gate guards.
The pool is scheduled to be open from June 14 to Aug. 23.
Council approved the request of Kurious Kids Learning Center to use the borough pavilion 5-8 p.m. June 22. The rental fee was waived, but council imposed a key deposit of $100 and a cleaning fee of $50.
Lehigh County Juvenile Probation received approval to use the borough’s gym for training 8 a.m.-4 p.m. May 26-29.
Council approved the hiring of Fatima Zimmer as a part-time police officer, pending background checks.
During the discussion segment of the meeting, Councilman Mick Dee thanked Bundra for his service to the borough.
A borough resident addressed council regarding possible noise levels that might come from an area data center. The structure referenced is a proposed manufactured lighting warehouse on Silo Drive. The majority of the property on Silo Drive is in Whitehall; only 4% of the land is in Coplay Borough. No action was taken.
Council next meets June 2 for a workshop and June 9 for a regular meeting, both 7 p.m. at borough hall, 98 S. Fourth St.
