LHS girls lacrosse makes history
Momentum is a powerful thing and Liberty’s girls’ lacrosse team is riding the wave.
The Hurricanes (10-8) closed out the season with a four-game win streak to clinch a District 11 berth and a spot in this week’s EPC tournament.
Both are firsts for the program, as well as a 14-11 win over Freedom last week.
It was a historic week for the program, and head coach Samantha Rella was thrilled to see this group bear the fruits of their labor.
“This is the first time in program history that we’ve qualified for both the EPC tournament and districts, and that means a lot to our team, our alumni, and our community,” said Rella. “It’s something these girls have earned through their work and commitment all season. To be able to make history together is really special, and it’s a reflection of how much this program has grown. Four years ago, when the seniors were freshmen, we finished the season 4-13. Every year we have gotten better. We’re competitive and have beaten teams we haven’t beaten before.”
One of those teams being Freedom, where Ellis Corr and Christina Bozakis led the show with five goals apiece in the win.
Erika Broesicke had 12 saves on the night too.
“Beating Freedom for the first time was an amazing moment for us,” said Rella. “I’m really proud of the girls for how they played—together, confident, and committed to our game plan. It was a big step forward, especially compared to our earlier loss to them.”
Now the Hurricanes get a taste of postseason action starting Thursday night in the first round of the EPC tournament when they play top-seeded Pleasant Valley (15-1) at 7 p.m. in Northampton.
It will be an uphill climb against one of the best programs in the conference, but Liberty is brimming with confidence.
“We’re looking forward to another opportunity to compete against a very talented team,” Rella said. “Our focus will be on playing together and giving our best effort, like we have the entire second half of our regular season.”
Freedom (8-8) will be out of the league playoffs this year, as the Liberty defeat was the final nail in that coffin.
The Pates will prep for next week’s District 11 tournament and wait to see if they officially grab the fifth seed, which is where they are seeded at the moment in the power rankings.
