Engineer provides updates on borough projects

Macungie Borough Council met May 4, at the Macungie Institute where Borough Engineer Joshua Fry, provided updates on a few projects. Regarding the Hickory Street Bridge, minor plan modifications are being made.

Main Street Commons is near completion. Mavis has been issued a letter about the delay in the completion of their project.

There were two executive sessions held – one April 30 regarding personnel issues and another held before the May 4 meeting over legal and personnel issues.

The police report was presented by Mayor Bob Sell Jr. Council Member Greg Hutchison asked how many body cameras the police department owns. He also asked if there are procedures for the camera usage.

Council member Stan Landis asked for some explanation on the police department report. His questions were mostly about the format of the report.

A Macungie Institute lease agreement was approved for the Macungie Historical Society. A lease agreement was also approved for Boy Scout Troop #71. The Boy Scouts are very grateful for this agreement.

A wage increase was approved for summer employment. The rate was approved at $17 an hour, up from $15.

Bob Bogert asked to be considered for the zoning hearing board. Council did not vote in favor of this action.

Sue Steinberg asked to be considered for the planning commission which council approved. This was Resolution 2026-03

Special legal council was approved.

The fire sprinkler system is in need of repairs at the Macungie Institute. This was approved.

Seal coating for parking lots at Macungie Borough Hall and Macungie Institute has not been done since 2020. Hovan was chosen as the company to do this and council approved.

Public comment was open. Solicitor Patrick Armstrong stated this is a business meeting to conduct business of the borough.

Several residents spoke about fire department issues and foul language and obscene gestures within the borough. Business owners are concerned with the way the borough is run. Another business owner spoke about his rights being violated. An employee spoke about being embarrassed being an employee of the borough. Other comments were made that any comment can be made at a council meeting per the court system.

A resident asked about missing archived minutes. Another resident spoke about the warnings of ticketing and towing for parking on streets to be swept.
