Falcon defense slows down NWL

The Palmerton Blue Bombers brought an end to Salisbury’s five-game winning streak recently with a 63-52 in the Falcons’ final road game of the regular season. Two nights earlier, Salisbury (10-6 Colonial, 13-8 overall) downed Northwestern Lehigh 39-35 in a hard-fought game.

The Tigers are a high-scoring team, but the Salisbury defense put on an impressive display to hold Northwestern (11-5, 14-7) to its lowest point total since Dec. 30 when they lost to Northampton and scored just 32 points. Northwestern has scored 70 or more points in six games and has scored as many as 84 points this year.

The game was a tight one all night with Northwestern leading 19-17 at halftime and the two-point advantage remained through the third quarter.

The Salisbury offense found another gear in the fourth quarter as Jake Zellin scored all six of his points in the final stanza and Drew Petrie and Brady Leiner both hit three-pointers for the Falcons. The defense held Northwestern’s leading scorer, Gavin Nelson, to just two points in the game, while Leiner led Salisbury with 12 points and Petrie finished with 10 in the win.

The defense could not repeat the performance against Palmerton (12-4, 12-8) two nights later as the Bombers and Falcons engaged in a more offensively oriented game.

Bryan Gonzalez led Salisbury with 16 points in the game and Leiner hit three three-pointers on his way to scoring 15 points. Tom Lovelidge chipped in 10 points for Salisbury.

Salisbury had already wrapped up a district playoff spot and is in position to earn a place in the Colonial League playoffs, which get underway Saturday with quarterfinal games.

As division winners, Notre Dame (17-0, 19-2) and Palmerton will have first round byes. The Falcons will likely be a six seed in the league playoffs, but could move to as high as fourth if there are a couple upsets in the final league games.

As things stand now, Salisbury would play at Saucon Valley (12-6, 14-7) in the quarterfinals.

The schedule officially wrapped up Tuesday against Southern Lehigh (6-10, 7-14) on the Falcons’ home court.
