Liberty preps for weekend’s district duals

Liberty might have saved their best dual tournament results of the season for the last weekend of the regular season. The Hurricanes competed at the Quakertown Duals on Saturday and came away with four wins in five matches.

Liberty (12-6) knocked off Hatboro Horsham, Washington (WV), West Chester Rustin and Kennett before dropping their final match to Quakertown 41-26.

Still, it was a good weekend for the team and one that head coach Brandon Hall was happy to see everyone get some run on the mats.

“I thought we wrestled well for the most part,” said Hall. “We were able to get everyone multiple matches at either the JV or varsity level. It was great to see some kids get to spots they have been working toward all season. Quakertown has some kids that on that next level but as a team we competed with them while coming up a little short of a win.”

The results helped solidify a seat at the table of this weekend’s district duals tournament at Freedom. The final seedings will come out later this week, but Liberty should enter the tournament as the seventh or eighth seed following their regular season finale Wednesday night against a 1-8 Pocono Mountain West squad.

Whether Liberty comes in seventh or eighth, they’ll still have a matchup with one of the likes of Easton, Nazareth or Bethlehem Catholic.

That task is going to be difficult for anyone in the team tournament, but being able to get five matches over the weekend at Quakertown gives the Hurricanes some added reps before they head into the postseason.

“Not sure what warm up would be needed to prepare us, given our experience level, for one of the top three teams in our district,” said Hall, “but all of these chances to compete are opportunities to improve as a wrestler as we get closer to the post season.”

Freedom (10-8) might be on the outside looking in at the team tournament, as the Pates were eleventh in the District 11 3A power rankings coming into the week.

Only the top eight teams in 3A qualify for the tournament.

The Pates finish the regular season Wednesday against East Stroudsburg South.
