Salisbury girls basketball relies on defense

The Lady Falcons continue to have trouble getting enough points on the board to win games this season. In their last three games they have scored a total of 65 points, not enough to get past Bangor, Wilson or Pen Argyl as their overall record fell to 2-11 on the season and 0-10 in the Colonial League.

Bangor (6-3 Colonial, 9-4 overall) downed Salisbury 47-21 behind 17 points from Avery Nelson. The Falcons got 12 points from Kendra Morgan, who continues to play well.

Salisbury alum Meagan Eripret came back to her alma mater as the coach of the Wilson Warriors and coached her team to a 38-23 win over Salisbury. The Falcons defense did its job to keep the game close for much of the time with Salisbury trailing just 5-3 after the first quarter of play.

In the second quarter, the Warriors moved out to an eight-point lead only to see the lead cut back down to four and then expand back to eight. Maya Suleiman hit a basket to cut it to six, but Aby Colon topped that with a three-pointer to move the lead back to nine.

“Our girls have trouble offensively,” said coach Paul Ziegenfus. “We played pretty well defensively today, and we have been able to do that at times this season, but the scoring – the lack of scoring – is hurting us in games.”

The Falcons showed some fight as they again looked to cut into the nine-point spread. Morgan drove the lane for a basket and on the next trip down the floor, Bella Nimeh hit a foul shot to make the score 21-16. Morgan was able to keep working her way to the foul line and finished the game hitting eight of her ten foul shots, including two early in the fourth quarter to cut it to 24-20.

Wilson (2-9, 3-10) went on an 11-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Colon to put the Warriors up by 15 and the Falcons were not able to cut into the lead.

“It’s not a matter of effort or fight from our team. We have seen them keep coming after teams, but when we get down, our lack of offense makes it difficult for us to get back into the game,” said Ziegenfus. “The effort is there in games and in practices, but it’s just not coming together for us.”

Morgan finished with a game-high of 14 points against Wilson.

Monday night, Pen Argyl (7-3, 10-4) downed the Falcons 59-19.

The first quarter came to an end with the two teams tied at eight. The Green Knights went on to score 28 second quarter points and led 36-12 at halftime. Pen Argyl’s Ellie Wallbillich scored 17 of her 21 points in the second quarter to lead the Knights in the scoring binge.

Morgan and Ava Smarch finished with six points to lead the Falcons.

To make matters worse, the Falcons embarked on a stretch of four games in five days when they faced Pen Argyl. They follow that up with a nonleague game at Kutztown (1-11) and after a day off play at Palisades (3-6, 3-7) and then host Saucon Valley (1-9, 2-11) on Friday.
