Theater Review: MunOpCo ‘Dreamgirls’ a musical to remember

“Dreamgirls” is one of those songs that you will be singing to yourself long after you have left the theater.

The MunOpCo Music Theatre production of the musical, “Dreamgirls,” continues through March 5, Scottish Rite Cathedral, Allentown. The opening night Feb. 25 performance was seen for this review.

The MunOpCo “Dreamgirls” production will resonate with you for its songs, including the title song, and the song, “(And I’m Telling You) I’m Not Going”; the production numbers, and especially the singers.

At the center of “Dreamgirls” is the singing group, The Dreams. The musical, with music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen, is loosely based on the careers of The Supremes, other Motown “girl groups” and R&B groups of the 1960s, as well as disco groups of the 1970s.

“Dreamgirls” is a backstage musical. Instead of the setting being Broadway, the story takes place on club and concert stages, in the wings of music venues and in the recording studio.

The storyline is set during a time when it was difficult for African-American pop performers to achieve parity with European-American performers in most aspects of the music business.

“Dreamgirls” depicts behind-the-scenes disagreements, apparent betrayals and romantic entanglements of the show’s main characters. That aside, the music, the songs and the singing are what make “Dreamgirls” memorable.

The original Broadway production, which opened in 1981, was nominated for 13 Tony Awards, receiving six Tonys, including Best Musical. It was adapted as a movie in 2006.

MunOpCo “Dreamgirls” Director Alejandra Santos directs the cast of 28 with assuredness, sensitivity and an excitement for the material. There are 18 songs in Act 1 and 11 songs in Act 2.

It’s a glitzy show. Choreographer Crystal Williams brings the dancers down front for some dazzling footwork. Set, Lighting and Sound Designer is Jonathan Tobias. Costume Managers are Nate Kuhns and Connie Santos. Hair and Makeup is by BShanice Styles Salon.

The MunOpCo production is one of the few area musicals presented by a regional theater in the post-Covid years whereby singers are not accompanied by prerecorded music tracks. A 14-piece orchestra is center stage, conducted by David Mascari. Music Director is Karl DeBoeser.

The musicians are superb. Brass fanfare, woodwind trills and driving percussion propel the songs, bringing Las Vegas showroom-style to the Scottish Rite Cathedral stage along Allentown’s Hamilton Street. The show is alone worth seeing, and hearing, for the stellar sounds that fill the auditorium.

Speaking of reasons to see MunOpCo’s “Dreamgirls,” you don’t want to miss the incredible performance by Krystle Tate as Effie, who has a voice that is incomparable in the show’s signature title song, “Dreamgirls,” along with the amazing vocals of Arianna Rodriguez (Deena) and Taylor Hood (Lorrell).

The song, “Dreamgirls,” opens Act II in grand style, this time with Rebekah Gray (Michelle), another powerhouse singer, joining Rodriguez and Hood.

Tate returns in Act II, with Rodriguez, Hood and Gray, for the show-stopping and heart-stopping, “(And I’m Telling You) I’m Not Going.”

I am telling you that you had better go see the show to hear Tate’s powerful and evocative voice. She is a talent to be reckoned with.

In “Dreamgirls,” it’s not all girl power. The guys have some great songs, vocals and dancing, too.

Tyree Scott as Jimmy, the R&B singer, has moves that would make James Brown “break out - in a cold sweat,” and vocals that would make Little Richard shout, “Good Golly.” Among the songs where Scott pulls out all the stops are “Baby-Baby,” “Walkin’ Down The Strip,” “Ain’t No Party” and “I Meant You No Harm.”

Marcell McKenzie (Curtis) is in fine vocal form for “Steppin’ To The Bad Side,” “It’s All Over” and “You Are My Dream,” the latter sung with emotional conviction.

Notable in supporting roles are Treyvonn Cephas (CC) and Kevin Rizzo (Marty).

Juneika Martinez, Quisha Farrell and Victoria Spruiell are in good voice as the Stepp Sisters and Les Styles.

Khylah Eure, Mariah Goiran, Clara Alford and Kayla Carrington are tremendous as Featured Dancers.

Congratulations to Santos, the entire cast and production team for bringing “Dreamgirls” to the MunOpCo Music Theatre stage. It’s a show to remember.
