Inman, freshmen lead Emmaus girls to four straight wins

The Emmaus High School girls basketball team has had quite the start to the 2022-23 regular season. Through the first two weeks of the season, the Green Hornets are undefeated at 4-0, and three of the four games were decided by double digits.

Emmaus (4-0 overall; 2-0 East Penn Conference) began the season with back-to-back road games on the first weekend of December. The Green Hornets had their closest game of the season to date in the season opener on Friday, December 2. They held on late to take down Southern Lehigh 46-44. Freshman Olive Whitney tied the game at 44-44 with a 3-pointer with just about 0:30 to play. Senior Paige Inman then rebounded her missed free-throw and laid in the game-winning basket with just 0:05 left to give her team the dramatic win. Freshman Gabby De Vita led all scorers with 16 points.

Less than 24 hours later, Emmaus remained on the road and continued its winning ways, putting another nonconference victory on its resume, taking down Wilson West Lawn 38-21 in a defensive battle. Gabby De Vita and Taylor Griffith led the way with 14 points apiece for the Green Hornets. Last week, the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference portion of the scheduled opened up for Emmaus. The Hornets led from start to finish and picked up another win away from home, beating Allen 36-19. Griffith was the leading scorer with nine points, followed by seven from Inman.

Three days later, Emmaus continued its win streak and kept its unbeaten mark by coming out on top in the home opener against Dieruff, 61-49. The Green Hornets broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Huskies 14-5 to extend what was just a three-point lead (14-11) after the opening quarter, to a 28-16 advantage heading into halftime. Inman recorded a season-high 20 points and De Vita added 10 points. Olive Whitney and Griffith both just missed scoring in double figures as each finished with nine points.

Emmaus once again has a stretch of road games this week. The Green Hornets are at Whitehall on Tuesday, followed by a game at East Stroudsburg South on Friday. A nonconference matchup at Scranton the following day concludes the week.
