Midseason injuries derailed girls soccer team in 2022

The Salisbury High School girls soccer team finished its 2022 season a few weeks ago. The Falcons missed out on the postseason, ending with a 6-11 overall record. Head coach Rick Babyak dealt with injuries to key players later in the year after starting the season by stringing together some victories.

“We had a very good start to the season,” said Babyak. “We won four of our first seven games with wins over Oley, Notre Dame East Stroudsburg, Wilson and Catty. After that, key misses of players due to injury started having a big effect.”

Some of the notable games included a 1-0 win over Wilson and competing with Southern Lehigh until the very end.

“The win over Wilson was particularly exciting, with Madison Reis scoring the game-winner in overtime,” Babyak said. “I also appreciated the way we came out in the second half of the Southern Lehigh game. We played with confidence and poise, holding them scoreless. For our young team, this was a good indication of what we will be capable of as we mature.”

There were a couple of players that Babyak highlighted for their performances this season.

“Freshman Madison Reis finished with 13 goals and one assist, a very good start to her career,” Babyak said. “Senior captain and goalkeeper Hannah Kamp finished with 317 saves this season, adding to her 427 career saves at the end of last season for an incredible 744 career saves. Sophomore Gabi Pena was our strongest and most consistent defender in front of Kamp. Sophomore Shyann Cortes was also covering a lot of defensive territory for us before she went down with an injury. Junior Gianna Cilibretti put in good steady performances as a defender. Junior Alex Miller was also on track as a steady defender before we lost her to injury. Freshmen Autumn Evans and Kaitlyn Neuhs also put in high work rate efforts through the midfield.

“We saw improvement from all of our players this season, and I really appreciate the work they all put in. We are already making plans for the next season and are in the process of organizing our indoor team, which will begin play in December.”

Three seniors will graduate, including Kamp, Angela Bitar and Mikayla Lighting.

“We will definitely miss our seniors,” said Babyak. “Hannah Kamp was incredible for us in goal and as our team leader. Angela Bitar is a true athlete and set a great example for our younger players. Mikayla Lighting was a steady hard worker who also set a great example for her teammates to follow.”
