Community Heroes recognized at annual Emmaus Public Library event

Emmaus police, fire and ambulance first responders were the heroes recognized Oct. 6 at the 21st annual Community Heroes Day at the Emmaus Public Library.

Children were able to sit in the driver’s seat of fire, police and ambulance emergency vehicles, talk to first responders and take home some neat handouts, like fire helmets and police badge stickers.

While the annual event, held every year since the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on America, serves to recognize and honor first responders who put themselves in jeopardy every day to protect their community, the event also serves to put a friendly face with the uniformed fire, police and ambulance personnel who might be intimidating to youngsters caught up in a community emergency response.

Sue Monroe, youth services librarian at the Emmaus Public Library, said patrons at the library ask every fall when the heroes day will be scheduled.

“It’s one of our favorite and important nights of the year,” Monroe said. “It’s the night when we get to meet, thank and learn from the local first responders who keep us and out communities safe.”
