Emmaus girls lacrosse earns top seed in EPC

Last week, the Emmaus High School girls lacrosse team finished up its regular season, defeating rival Parkland and ending at 16-2 overall and 8-1 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. The Green Hornets earned the top seed in this week’s conference tournament. Emmaus head coach Roxann Betz is excited for what her team has accomplished, but knows there’s more to play for.

“I was very pleased with the season overall,” said Betz. “We started off winning many games by large margins and then faced tougher competition at the end which was a great way to prepare for playoffs. We learned some important things in our losses and key wins to help us build upon our success this season. The coaches and girls have worked hard all year which helped us get to the point we are at this season. Our seniors have demonstrated amazing leadership on and off the field and have really worked hard at staying positive and having fun with this amazing game of lacrosse.

“I’m very proud of our seniors and our entire team. This has been a very memorable season and each and every player has contributed to our success and enjoyment.”

Emmaus opened the EPC Tournament Tuesday with a semifinal match up against the rival Trojans. While a victory and then a title in the next game would be great to have, Betz also has her eyes set on bigger and better things down the line.

“EPC’s are an exciting time, but honestly districts are more important and the focus of our season-long goal of a championship,” said Betz. “EPCs will bring great competition from all four teams competing and anyone of the four teams can win. So, we hope to play at our best to give our team an opportunity to win some games.”

Even in a season where they lost just twice in 18 games, the Green Hornets can still improve on their games.

“We need to continue to work on adjusting to each and every game from our play, our opponents play, and officiating,” Betz said. “What can we learn from the team we are playing? What they are having success with and how can we adjust to halt that success. What do we need to improve on? How is the game being called-do we need to make in game adjustments? We have focused on adjusting all season. Still would like to improve on this aspect of our play especially with tough competition ahead.”

Coming off a win over Parkland less than a week ago, Betz knows the game may be much different this time around with the two teams just seeing each other.

“I expect they will make some adjustments as have we,” said Betz. “We want to go into this game like every other game, focus on our game, play our game and make any adjustments needed.”
