Football team improves to 8-0

The Northampton football team remained the only undefeated squad in the EPC following their 56-16 demolition of Pocono Mountain East last Friday at Al Erdosy Stadium.

On paper the game was not expected to be competitive and it delivered on those expectations. Northampton scored touchdowns on all 6 first half possessions on their way to a 43-8 halftime lead.

Although the final result was never in doubt, there were plenty of exciting plays to entertain the home crowd.

The K-Kids opening score came on a screen pass from Cooper King to Tristen Pinnock for 38 yards on 3rd and 17.

Senior captain and tight end Caden Reph streaked 63 yards down the right sideline to score the longest touchdown of his life to put the Kids up by two scores.

Jaelen Richardson laid out to snag a 36-yard pass from King to set up Caden Henritzy for a 3-yard dash to the pylon for Northampton’s third score.

Even East’s lone first half score came on a 78-yard pass play by their backup quarterback.

Head coach John Toman praised the effort of his reserves. “I was most proud of the fact that we came out in the second half and didn’t play one starter and still ate up the whole quarter and went down and scored a touchdown,” he said. “Whenever that happens (bringing in the backups) you worry about going three-and-out when they still have their starters on the field. I was really happy with the seconds and thirds that got in there and kept it going and scored some touchdowns.”

King was 8 of 9 passing for 201 yards and 2 TDs.

Jacob Dermott led the team in rushing with 72 yards on 9 carries and a pair of second-half scores. Henritzy had 49 yards on the ground. Everett Luisi had 18 yards and two touchdowns.

Pinnock totaled 4 catches for 77 yards to lead the Kids in both categories.

The win put the K-Kids at 8-0 on the season and officially clinched a district berth and at least a tie for the EPC North Division title.

They can wrap up the division with a win against Dieruff on Friday. The Huskies have been frisky of late, riding a 2-game win streak with victories over Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg North by a combined score of 80-30. Northampton should expect a little more resistance than they faced last week, but it would be surprising if most of the second half was not played under the Mercy Rule.

Reph spoke about the team’s mindset going into the final stretch: “Job’s not finished. Hopefully, get a win next week, get that EPC North title and take it to Whitehall and get prepared for playoffs. We definitely have to focus week-by-week because we need each game for playoff seeding. We’re just looking to take one week at a time.”
