HANOVER TOWNSHIP Flag retirement ceremony marks Patriot Day

Sept. 11, 2021 marked the 20th anniversary of the four coordinated terrorist attacks by the militant Islamist group known as al-Queda against the United States. This anniversary, now known as Patriot Day, was highlighted in Hanover Township.

Matt DeGeorge, recreation director for Hanover Township, welcomed everyone to the event. “Today, 9/11 represents service,” he said, “and it’s a very different world than it was 20 years ago.”

DeGeorge introduced World Trade Center survivor Jeff Perlman, the event’s key speaker. Perlman spoke to a packed room about his experience.

“Never forget 9/11 but always remember 9/12,” he said, recalling the sense of patriotism shared by Americans following the attacks.

DeGeorge directed the crowd’s attention to the flag retirement ceremony being held outside.

Hanover Township Manager John Finnigan Jr. welcomed the community, the Boy Scouts, and American Legion Post #379 to this solemn ceremony.

Scout Ilia Khalouf of Troop #352 spoke to the crowd about his personal knowledge and feelings regarding 9/11, an event that happened before he was born. He explained the significance of the retirement of the flag.

“The proper way to dispose of worn and tattered flags is in a respectful, honorable ceremony,” he said. As the scouts prepared to burn the flags, American Legion representatives played “Taps” and presented a rifle volley salute. The scouts concluded this event by burning multiple retired flags as two bagpipers from Liberty HS played “Amazing Grace.”
