Top-seeded Trojans seek District 11 team title

The 2021 Parkland boys tennis team is focused on adding the biggest hardware to its 2021 trophy case by winning a District 11 Class 3A boys team championship this week.

After an undefeated regular season that left the Trojans tied with Liberty for the regular season championship, the two teams also tied and shared the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference tournament championship.

The Trojans want the District 11 title all to themselves. Parkland coach Michael Hingston knows that will not be easy.

“There are a lot of schools that can challenge us,” said Hingston. “In no particular order, Emmaus, Liberty, Southern Lehigh and Freedom will all be tough.”

Parkland’s coach said his team will need solid performances from everyone.

“If we don’t play well, we could be coming home early,” he said. “I just don’t see anyone walking away with it.”

Singles player Dan Zolotarev is coming off a strong showing in the District 11 3A singles tournament, losing in the championship match to Freedom’s Noah Potts. The Trojans’ most consistent player all season could be Fyodor D’Souza.

“He’s just had a stellar season,” Hingston said. “He is a great fighter and has the type of game that can adapt.”

Josh Thomas, a young man who started the season without great fanfare, impressed Hingston so much that by the season’s end he was consistently playing number one singles.

The Ankit Lee and Lucas Lee doubles team earned the EPC championship in No. 2 doubles and played well all year. Mridul Gupta and Josh Jaffee gave opponents problems all season and followed that up with the EPC title in No. 3 doubles. Ee-Ning Ooi and Taeyuk Yang won EPC championship gold at No. 4 and were almost unbeatable during the year.

“A lot of time people take doubles for granted,” Hingston said. “But we don’t.”

That’s one more reason why no one in District 11 can take Parkland for granted.
