Graver earns three D-11 medals

After earning a pair of medals at last year’s District 11 Swimming and Diving Championships, Salisbury senior Julia Graver did one better this season in a few different ways.

She finished one place higher on the medal stand this season, taking third place in both of her individual events. She earned one more medal, as this season a relay medal was added to her hardware. She also beat last year’s time in one of her individual events by exactly one-hundredth of a second.

“She did amazing,” said Salisbury head coach Mackenzie Sikora. “Julia did really well last year. This year, with having so many breaks with the snow and with COVID, Julia has always put her best foot forward. She really deserved everything she got this year. I’m really proud of her.”

After fourth-place finishes last year in both the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, Graver moved up a tier on the medal stand this year, taking third place in both events.

She swam the backstroke in 1:04.03 and posted a 2:02.61 in the 200 free.

Graver also anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay, the last event of the meet. For her and fellow senior Eliza Wiener, it was also the final swim of their high school careers.

Salisbury was seeded seventh in the 400 free relay with a seed time of 4:19.53. Weiner swam lead off and put in a 59.61 split to put her team among the top four after the first leg. Sophomore Ella DeFazio (1:03.59) kept the Falcons in medal contention before freshman Tula Reihman (1:01.37) swam her fastest split of the season. Graver’s anchor leg was 56.14 seconds for a third-place finish in 4:00.71.

“Our 400 free relay dropped 19 seconds,” said Sikora. “We swam it at our last meet. Then a week and a half later we dropped 19 seconds.

“We thought we were going to do fourth or fifth place. Somehow our girls did absolutely amazing and we got third.”

Salisbury’s girls team finished seventh out of 15 teams in the meet. In other individual events, Wiener took sixth place in the individual medley in 2:24.61, dropping over five seconds from her seed time. DeFazio finished 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:19.41.

Salisbury’s girls medley relay team took fourth place with the foursome of Wiener, DeFazio, Reihman and Genesis Almodovar in a time of 2:13.67.

The girls 200-yard freestyle relay team (Graver, DeFazio, Abigail Christman and Allison Beckage finished eighth in 1:56.86.

In boys event, junior Carver Moyer finished 16h in the 100 freestyle with a time of 59.40, breaking a minute for the first time in his career.

All three Salisbury boys relay teams finished eighth at districts. The 200 medley relay team (Noah Kichline, Nicholas Jewell, Gavin Berger, Carver Moyer) swam the race in 2:13.67.

The 400 free relay (Gavin Berger, Nicholas Jewell, Jackson Kramp, Carver Moyer) posted a time of 4:17.95, while the boys 200 free relay (Berger, Kichline, Kramp, Moyer) touched the wall in 1:50.92.
