Frozen Trojans beat Hornets

The Parkland High School ice hockey team was looking for something positive to happen and to stop the bleeding. Enter rival Emmaus. The Trojans scored a season-high in goals and took down the Green Hornets 8-1 last Friday night in Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League action at the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena.

The victory halted a two-game losing streak, one of Parkland’s longest during a regular season in years.

“We knew we weren’t playing to the standards of Parkland ice hockey,” said Trojan head coach Chad Loomis. “There were a couple bad breaks here and there, but we knew we could play better. It was nice to be able to come out strong and get a win over a good team like Emmaus.”

Parkland led from start to finish in this one as six different players tallied goals and eight different players recorded at least one point (goal or assist).

“When we’re playing at our best, we will have a number of different players score,” Loomis said. “We had a balance and depth to our offense tonight that was good to see.”

Zack McKeon and Louis Inserra opened up the scoring in the game with first period goals to put the Trojans ahead 2-0. When Zachary Averill found the back of the net 6:51 into the second period, Parkland held a 3-0 advantage and took complete control of the game.

Emmaus got on the scoreboard for the first time less than a minute later, but Alex Doe and Josh Bower scored back-to-back goals to finish out the period and the Trojans went up 5-1.

Bower added goals two and three on the night early in the third, and Doe capped the scoring with his second.

“Those two have been leaders for us all season,” said Loomis.” They are always working hard so to see them score goals is just the cherry on top.”

Luke Yocum and Bower contributed two assists, while Inserra and Andrew Lorch each had one in the victory. Colby Rosen made 16 saves in net.

Parkland finished the regular season with a convincing 11-0 win against Easton and finished third in the league standings with 15 points to qualify for the playoffs.
