LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Soccer teams eye district berths

The Northampton girls soccer team reached the midpoint of their 2020 season with a 2-3 record by sweeping Liberty 9-0 (Oct 7) and 2-0 (Oct 12) and dropping 2-0 to Nazareth in their game against the Blue Eagles on last Saturday.

Head coach Michael Missmer thought the game against Nazareth was the team’s best performance to date.

“Honestly we played really well,” he said. “The one (goal) was just a weird deflection. It was a bad ball that bounced off a kid right to the running forward. Considering the number of games they have under their belts with this being our fourth, I thought it was a great showing.”

Nazareth had a pair of early goals waived off due a player being offsides. The Blue Eagles notched the game’s first score a minute before halftime when an unreachable shot from just inside penalty area was placed cleanly in the top far corner.

The K-Kids struggled to generate quality chances during the run of play. They did manage to draw four free kicks from just outside the penalty area. One of those shots by Raine Korpics deflected off the keeper’s hands and then caromed off the crossbar for the Kids’ closest call of the day.

With five games remaining in the season, Northampton will have to generate at least three wins to qualify for districts. Two games against winless Bethlehem Catholic will help the cause. Their rematch at Nazareth on Wednesday was too late to make this edition.

They also have games with defending district champion Freedom on the next two Saturdays. The Patriots were swept by Nazareth and Easton have beaten Beca twice for their only wins.

The boys soccer team currently stands at 2-3-2. They began the season with a pair of one-goal losses to Freedom and then tied Easton twice. A sweep of Liberty evened their record before they dropped the first outing against Nazareth 2-0.

The boys also had their rematch with the Blue Eagles on Wednesday.

They finish their regular season slate with Bethlehem Catholic. They host the Golden Hawks on Monday and travel to Bethlehem on Wednesday. Beca is 1-7-1 on the season, so it looks like the boys have a path to districts if they just take care of business.
