Golf looks to surprise in rebuilding season

Northampton head golf coach Brian Davies understands how his program is cyclical.

“We tend to go in waves,” said Davies. “We can have a very good one or two years and then we’ll have a downside. We usually can’t reload like an Emmaus or Parkland.

“We won a league championship two years ago, and we had an individual league champion last year. We’ll be going through a rebuilding year this season, as we lost a lot of seniors from last year’s team.”

The Konkrete Kids basically will have a young club this season with five freshmen expected to be in the mix.

Ryan Kovach is the lone senior and captain of the team. Davies anticipates Kovach shooting between 85-88 this year.

Sophomore Madison Salter, who finished third at leagues last year, should be in the hunt also in the 85-88 range.

“She definitely one of the top five ladies’ golfers in the area,” said Davies. “She is going to be hard to beat.”

Freshmen Justin Edwards, Trent Moyer, and Michael Seidick all have potential to make their mark.

“All of the are shooting 90 to 95 now,” said Davies. “They have a lot of room for improvement. They will come around the more they play, and they’ll get there.”

Through their first three matches, the Kids had an overall 2-1 record on their 10-match schedule this fall. They beat Easton and Whitehall and lost to Freedom

“Our goal is to be .500 or better,” said Davies. “We believe we can get there. We will only play teams in Northampton County due to COVID-19, and Liberty will play teams in the Lehigh County.”

Davies sees his team back on top of the crest of the wave soon.

“We have a very young team,” noted Davies. “For our team, it’s all about next year and the year after. If we continue to improve, we have a strong team in two years. That’s when we’ll be able to compete for a championship.

“We need a little bit more seasoning.”

Madison Salter is expected to be one of the better female golfers in the area this season.
