Upper Mac Police Chief Colón attends security seminar

Less than a dozen people attended Upper Macungie supervisors' July 2 meeting, two days before the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

During the meeting, township Administrator Dan Olpere praised Police Chief Edgardo Colón on his attendance at the Army War College in Carlisle.

One of only 163 candidates selected out of the entire country for this training concerning national security, Colón was nominated by U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey to attend the seminar.

In other matters, the board approved a resolution entering into an agreement with a collection agency to collect back fees for sewer and refuse accounts.

Arcadia Recovery Bureau LLC would add its fee of 20 percent to the money owed.

Memorial Road speed signs won't be coming soon.

As this is a state road, the state will not do the study unless the township agrees to place and maintain the signs.

Supervisors voted to table this matter until further information is obtained from the state.

The roof on the Toth barn in Trexlertown has been torn down but the site has not been secured.

The area is to be fenced in to deny access to the public for safety reasons.

"We need a time line from them for removal," Supervisor Kathy Rader.

The issue, also, was tabled until next meeting.

The July 13 meeting scheduled with fire company representatives will be changed due to conflicts.

Possible new dates will be at the end of July or beginning of August.

New recreation board members are Brian Kresge and Stephanie Rauch-Mannino.

Kresge will replace Rich Kiser. Rauch-Mannino will replace Sean Gill.

Charles Deprill will serve as an alternate to the zoning hearing board. He is replacing Nancy Muick.

The Route 222/Schantz Road traffic light project is moving along.

Lights have been erected and will be electrified soon.

A meeting with RK&K, the contractor, is scheduled for 5 p.m. July 21 at Independent Park.

There will be a meeting with LANta and Lower Macungie Township 7 p.m. July 13 at the township building to discuss a study of the Hamilton Boulevard corridor.

A study was done to upgrade the route with cosmetic features such as planters.

The police report was give by Officer Dathen Schlegel.

He said the new K-9, Toon, will begin duty on Aug. 10.

The monthly crime and incident report showed DUI and fraud crimes were the most reported with seven each.

Thefts and vehicle break-ins followed closely with six occurrences each.

Total calls for service amounted to 775, an increase over last June's count of 687. Traffic citations were 412, with 111 false alarms.
