U. Macungie declares June 4 Samir Ashmar Day
With his emotions showing, Chairman Jim Brunell read a proclamation to the audience and to the family of the late Samir Ashmar declaring June 4 Samir Ashmar Day.
Ashmar was eulogized for his untiring work in the township and for his service as supervisor.
The former vice chairman of the board of commissioners died unexpectedly Nov. 20, 2014, at age 51.
Ashmar served on the township planning commission and the authority since 2006.
A volunteer firefighter for 32 years, he served with Good Will Fire Company, No. 1, Trexlertown, Lower Macungie Township Station 30, and most recently as fire marshal and EMT for Upper Macungie Township Station 56.
He was an assistant to the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal, and was a member of the International, National and Pennsylvania Association of Arson Investigators.
Ashmar also served on the Board of Directors for the Burn Prevention Foundation, Allentown, from 2000 to 2009.
The proclamation was then presented to the Ashmar family, including his wife Sharon, son Josh and daughter Makala.
In other business, KRE Group came before the board saying the planning commission recommended approval of the waiver of the building height restriction for the proposal.
The township will advertise for an ordinance amendment needed for KRE to proceed.
Trexler Fields residents were at the meeting to discuss the walking path in their development.
Some residents are opposed to this path and would like it rerouted to another location.
An amicable agreement was reached at the end on the discussion.
The Toth barn was again discussed.
Code Enforcement Officer Kyle Kuester issued an order to have the barn torn down as it was deemed an unsafe structure, according to township ordinance.
The structure, owned by Mike and Doris Toth, is at the rear of 1208 Trexlertown Road.
Doris Toth, represented by her son, Anthony, proposes to fix the barn so it can be used again.
Pictures of the structure were shown to the board.
Brunell said he would be afraid to walk into the building seeing its condition.
After a lengthy discussion, the issue was postponed until the board's next meeting.
