LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Hyatt, Wawa are coming

South Whitehall Township residents can look forward to a Hyatt hotel and a Wawa in redevelopment of the Cedar Point West shopping district in Dorneyville.

David Lear, of Lehigh Engineering, presented the proposal to commissioners during the courtesy of the floor portion of the May 6 meeting.

In the new layout, Carrabas is the only building remaining intact.

The Friendly's Restaurant would be removed, and the Wendy's would be repositioned.

A four-story Hyatt hotel with 122 rooms would be designed to meet the height restrictions of the area.

The Wawa would be about 4,000 square feet in the spot now occupied by Wendy's.

Township Manager Howard Kutzler expressed a positive reaction to the plan.

"When you see investment like this, it is a home run for the community almost a grand slam," he said. "This is great. "When I heard Hyatt, I thought 'wow.'

"Wendy's is a new design something new they're starting. The plan adds more green for a nice gateway to the township."

Commissioners advised Lear to move forward with formal submission of plans to other township boards for review.

Turning attention to another Dorneyville property, commissoners looked at the rezoning request for the Kuss Bros. Nursery at 670 S. Cedar Crest Blvd.

In a written request, consulting engineer Mark Bradbury reported a Neighborhood Commercial designation would be appropriate for development of the 8-acre tract, which transitions to medical offices and neighboring Salisbury Township zoning.

Commissioners suggested Bradbury take the proposal to the planning commission for further consideration.

Commissioners granted approval to Compass Business Center for a 3,400-square-foot warehouse with seven parking spaces on a 0.32-acre plot at 4845 Crackersport Road.

Due to the small size of the lot, zoning relief was secured as well as certification from the Federal Emergency Managemen Agency documenting the portion to be developed is not in the flood plain or wetlands.

In other business, commissioners approved the police department to proceed with purchase of a 2016 Ford F-250 at a cost of $41,693 and a 2016 Ford utility police Interceptor at a cost of $37,374.

The Interceptor will replace a Chevrolet Tahoe, which will be forwarded to Cetronia Ambulance Corps.

The new unit will have an updated electrical system and cages, which Police Chief Thomas Toth reports will help in achieving accredidation.

Commissioners also approved purchase of 15 Tasers at a cost of $16,700.

In honor of National Police Week May 10-16, commissioners recognized eight senior patrol officers with 20 or more years of service.

These individuals are Mark Keller, David Keck, Jeffrey Natysyn, Richard Mirarchi, James Sandrock Jr., Richard Meckes, Edward Keck and Jerome Cramer.
