Coplay Column

St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Fifth Street, and the Coplay Public Library are partnering for an event on Saturday.

The church will hold a chicken and ham dinner, and the library will hold a basket social.

The dinner and basket social is from 4 to 7 p.m.

The Coplay Democratic Club will hold a "Meet the Candidates" event on Saturday, May 2, 1:30 p.m., at Paulie's Restaurant, Chestnut and Ruch streets.

Streets across Coplay Borough are scheduled to be swept by the public works department May 20 and 21. Alleys will not be swept.

The job has been contracted to a private company. North Catasauqua will also provide its street sweeper.

Streets will be posted as "no parking" prior to street sweeping. Failure to comply may result in a ticket or possibly towing.

Even-numbered streets will be swept on one day, followed by odd numbers the other day.

Property owners are reminded to sweep the grit off their walks onto the streets before street sweeping takes place.

Binnie's Hot Dog Restaurant, Front and Chestnut streets, has been closed since January for renovation, according to a sign on the door window. It may now in fact be closed permanently.

Since no work has begun and a "for sale" has been posted, it seems unlikely the shop will reopen.

Also closed after several decades is the art school at Second and Chestnut streets, occupying lofts on a couple of floors at which, years ago, a cigar manufacturing plant existed.

The classes brought aspiring artists from across the region to the school, with all forms of art taught.
