Swimmers look forward to districts

Northampton's varsity swim team hosted Easton High School on Thursday, Feb. 12, and while Rovers came away from the meet with a win, the Kids enjoyed several strong individual swims and took the opportunity to show the strength of their relay teams.

For the girls team, Northampton's Annalise Christy took first in the 200 yard freestyle with a winning time of 2:12.25 and added a victory in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:52.42. The girls relay team of Kelly Thoma, Brynn Delvecchio, Kaitlin Nemes and Rachael Pursell also claimed a first place win in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:08.86.

Northampton's boys relay squad, comprised of Michael Bauer, Kaden Chambers, Steton Weber and Gavyn Frankenfield, took first place in both the 200 yard medley relay (with a time of 1:47.64) and the 400 yard freestyle relay (with a time of 3:34.18).

In the boys individual events, Chambers took first place in both the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.27 and the 500 yard freestyle (5:08.33). Frankenfield placed first in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 56.80.

With the regular season winding down, the Northampton coaching staff seems pleased with the performance of the team this year.

"Overall it was a successful season," said Northampton assistant coach Cullen Mentzel. "We saw a huge improvement in our first and second year swimmers, and our more experienced swimmers dropped time in their individual events."

Over the next week, Northampton will spend their time preparing for the district championship meet for which two Northampton girls and four Northampton boys have qualified.

The team is also bringing three additional members of the girls' squad to compete at districts in relay events.

"With districts coming up, we are working on cleaning up our swims; working on starts, turns, breakouts, finishes, and relay starts," added Mentzel.

The district championship meet will take place on Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28, at Parkland High School.

Steton Weber and the Kids recently completed their regular season.
