Kids set sights on postseason

How Northampton competes this weekend at the District 11 3A wrestling tournament will be determined upon one thing according to head coach Seth Lisa.

"I'm just hoping our guys show up and give 100 percent," said Lisa.

It sounds simple, but if wrestlers can't give 100 percent this time of the year, they won't last long as the opening weekend of the individual postseason takes place at Liberty's Memorial Gymnasium this Friday and Saturday.

The Kids return four returning place-winners from last year's tournament and Lisa expects all four, plus more, to move onto the Northeast Regional tournament.

"I think we have a solid 10-12 guys that can win matches and move on," he said. "I don't like giving out numbers for how many guys I expect to advance because it really comes down to how our guys perform. If you can put six minutes together and wrestle hard, you can surprise people."

Senior Todd Hetrick will get his final chance at district gold, as he will compete at 132-pounds this weekend. Hetrick lost to Nazareth's Chase Zemenak 13-0 in last year's 132-pound championship and will look for redemption this time around.

Sophomore Dan Moran (113) was a top-seed last year at 106 and took third, but could grab top-seed honors again this year.

Liberty's KJ Fenstermacher will contend for the top-seed as well at that weight, which could present a terrific championship bout should both make their way through the bracket.

Michael Scheetz (120) took fourth at 113 a year ago, while Josh Coleman (160) finished in fifth last season at 152. Both are expected to medal and advance to regionals as well.

Lisa also considers Cade Moisey (152) and Jason Kocher (220) as capable competitiors to advance to regionals.

"I really think we can have a good showing," Lisa said. "As a team, it would be great if we could finish top-three as a team. It can be done, but we need everyone to score points."

Below is Northampton's lineup for this weekend with wrestlers at their competing weights.
