Girls eliminated from playoffs
Before the season began Jeff Jacksits said "hopefully our girls will make the districts.
Two weeks ago when Nazareth beat his Northampton girls' team it looked pretty bleak for the Konkrete Kids.
The loss to the Eagles the No. 2 team in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference's Skyline Division dropped Northampton's league record to 3-8, meaning the Kids had to win their remaining five games to qualify for the District 11 playoffs.
Well, the "never say never" girls were on the edge of staying alive in the playoff race when they visited Central Catholic (unbeaten in the league) Tuesday night.
The Vikettes, who beat the Kids 55-40 on Jan.6 ended Northampton's three-game winning streak at Rockne Hall with a 49-35 decision and dropped the Kids' record to 6-9 in the league.
CCHS took a 20-9 lead after one period, but Northampton cut the deficit to 38-30 after three quarters. But that was it as Coach Mike Kopp's Vikettes outscored the Kids 11-5 in the final eight minutes. Senior Giovanna Martinez led the Kids with 11 points while sophomore Aja Blount was held to nine and junior Sophia Eckroth had six.
The girls "never quit. They wanted to go out as winners for the seniors," said Jacksits.
The Kids' three-game comeback streak started with a 42-39 upset of Parkland and continued with a 47-35 win over Emmaus and reached their third straight win by downing Whitehall 49-44 in three overtimes last Friday.
Blount had 17 points and Eckroth and junior Lauren Sterner had 10 apiece in the "revenge" win over Parkland. Against Emmaus Martinez led the Kids with her best point output of the season with 19, while Blount had 15.
Another "revenge "win followed when the Kids stopped Whitehall with Martinez scoring 14 and Blount 21, while seniors Ali Reppert and Francesca Sanchez contributed key baskets at the end of regulation and in overtime.
"The last couple of games we had some good matchups," said Jacksits, but it didn't work out that way against Central Catholic.
Jacksits said "against Whitehall it was big girl (Blount) passing to big girl (Martinez) and big girl (Martinez) passing to big girl (Blount) that did the trick.
"It's good to see the girls are still learning. But it took longer than I wanted it to. These girls never quit."
Northampton (6-9 and 7-14) closes it season at home tonight against Nazareth and it will be Senior/Parents Night.
