LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Kids hot, but will battle weather too

Seth Lisa hopes that the clock hasn't struck midnight on his wrestling team's chances of qualifying for the District 11 team wrestling tournament next week.

The K-Kids (6-6) are also crossing their fingers that this week's potential snow threats will avoid their scheduled dual meets, as any cancellations this week could end their chances of qualifying for the postseason.

The Kids were sitting 14th in the power point totals entering last night's home match against Dieruff (4-14).

That match was past Press deadlines, but there was a possibility of the bout being postponed because of a potential snow storm. Delays and postponements is what Lisa can't afford, as the district deadline for bouts to count towards the postseason is this Saturday.

The Kids busy week continues tonight at home against Whitehall (16-5) and Saturday against Pocono Mountain West (7-10).

With forecasts flirting with snow for Saturday as well, Lisa is hoping that his team can get all their bouts completed in time.

"If we don't make it, we can only really blame ourselves," he said. "I think our team is coming together at the right time, but I just hope it's not too late. If we don't wrestle our three matches this week, I don't know if we'll have a shot at qualifying [for district duals]."

The Kids got a boost to their postseason outlook following last week's massive 33-30 upset over Easton (11-4), followed by their 39-19 victory over Pocono Mountain East (13-7).

The victories have put Northampton back onto the postseason bubble, as 12 teams will qualify from each classification when next week's opening round contests begin on Thursday.

"We have three more duals and we need to win each one of them to have a chance," Lisa said of this week's schedule. "I think the win over Easton has really energized us and we just want to keep the momentum going."

Senior 220-pounder Jason Kocher provided the biggest spark the program has seen in recent memory during the Easton match, by pinning Scott Betts in 1:21 during the final bout of the contest to give Northampton the victory in dramatic fashion, pulling them from a 30-27 deficit into victors.

The Kids won seven of the bouts over the Rovers, collecting bonus points in five of the matches.

"We knew we had seven toss up bouts and it was really going to come down to how we performed in those matches," said Lisa. "Up until that point of the season, we lost a lot of close matches and would then lose the bouts. That wasn't the case against Easton and the kids showed they're turning the corner at this point of the season."

Northampton continued their momentum over the weekend at the Escape the Rock tournament at Council Rock South, as three Kids placed in the 42-team tournament.

Dan Moran (113, sixth place), Todd Hetrick (132, fifth) and Cade Moisey (152, eighth) all medaled for Northampton.
