Girls starting to run out of time

With six games remaining in the regular season the Northampton girls basketball team is virtually on the outside looking in.

The Konkrete Kids fell 55-40 to Eastern Pennsylvania Conference rival Central Catholic last Friday and then dropped a 63-41 decision to nonleague foe Minersville on Saturday.

The losses dropped the Kids to 3-7 in the EPC and 4-12 overall with six games left against EPC Skyline division teams.

The Kids, however still have a mathematical chance of making the District 11 playoffs - but they must win five of those six games.

"We want our girls to compete and end on a positive note," said head coach Jeff Jacksits. "We're not giving up, but we're looking down the line toward our future. We keep plugging and we'll keep running plays until they click.

"I'm doing more teaching than coaching this year. Most of our girls didn't have much game experience and it showed. But, one thing is certain these girls don't quit. They're learning and improving all the time," said Jacksits. "We can play with most teams for two or three quarters, but our inexperience catches up with us."

Against CCHS the Kids trailed by only five at 29-24 by halftime, as sophomore Aja Blount scored 16 of her game-high 25 points. But, the Vikettes, who have only one loss, pulled away late in the third quarter as Northampton committed several turnovers.

On Saturday at Minersville, the once-beaten District 4 Class 2A powerhouse, led from start to finish and again Blount was high scorer for the Kids with 18.

Northampton's final six-game schedule began Tuesday night for at Nazareth and continues with a home game Friday against Parkland.

Then it's at Emmaus next Tuesday and Whitehall at home Friday (Jan. 30). The season ends the following week with NHS at CCHS on Tuesday Feb. 3, and at home with Nazareth Friday for senior night.
