Moran takes 2nd at Beast

Dan Moran was the lone Northampton wrestler to come away from the Beast of the East tournament in Delaware over the weekend with a medal.

And even though that medal came in the form of silver, Moran can get a chance at redemption in a couple of days when the Kids battle in another individual tournament.

Moran fell to Phillipsburg's Brandon Paetzell 3-1 in the 113-pound championship Sunday afternoon, succumbing to a second period takedown to ultimately void him of winning the Beast crown.

But he may get another shot at Paetzell this weekend, when the K-Kids head to Liberty for the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic, Sunday and Monday at Memorial Gymnasium.

Moran would have liked to win gold, but his performance of reaching the finals gave head coach Seth Lisa something to hang his hat on.

"I don't think we've had a finalist in 10 years," said Lisa of the Beast of the East. "He knocked off the number-one seed in the semifinals and had another tough match in the finals. It was a good tournament for Danny."

Moran beat Joey Prata of St. Christopher's (Va.) 7-5 in the semifinals to advance to the championship round, picking up a fall, forfeit, decision and ultimate tie-breaker victories along the way of his championship destination.

Lisa already knew his sophomore sensation could compete with anybody, as Moran was a PIAA runner-up a year ago, but being able to validate things further at one of the country's top tournaments is an added vote of confidence.

"Any time you go into big events like this and compete, it shows you that you can wrestle with anybody," said Lisa. "Danny has proven that time and again and he'll get better from it, just like all our guys who wrestled at the Beast."

With the holiday classic next on tap in the coming days, Lisa will be looking for more improvement out of his team.

"Every time we wrestle we want to get better," he said. "Some of the more experienced guys we have aren't where they want to be right now, but we'll get there.

"All of our guys have to go out and wrestle hard to help us get points in the team standings at Liberty."
