Kids return balanced team
Northampton's wrestling team may have lost some of their big guns from a year ago, but the K-Kids hope they can reload this winter to be a formidable opponent on the mats.
The K-Kids started off their season Monday with a 62-18 victory over East Stroudsburg North, but got a dose of reality on Wednesday night when they took on Bethlehem Catholic, in a bout past Press deadlines, to truly gauge where they are in the first week of the season.
Despite the losses of district champions and state qualifiers Zach Valley and Bobby Fehr, head coach Seth Lisa feels good about the nucleus he returns, starting with seniors Michael Scheetz (126), Todd Hetrick (132), Jake Kocher and Josh Coleman (170). Sophomores Cade Moisey (160) and Dan Moran (120) highlight the pair of young Kids back on the mat.
Moran is the biggest gem of them all, as he made a late season run last year en route to winning the regional crown, as well as taking second place at the PIAA championships.
Scheetz and Hetrick also qualified for Hershey last year, as Scheetz came away with a sixth place finish.
Freshman Logan Ninos (106) makes his debut on the mats this season, as Lisa hopes to see bright things from the frosh.
"It's very difficult to replace the talent as well as the leadership from last year," said Lisa. "It's important for our returning wrestlers to pick it up. We have better balance through the line up this year and the majority of our line up has a good amount of experience."
With Wednesday's matchup against Becahi being the first real test for Northampton, Lisa will have a better handle of where his team needs to improve moving forward, but knows that every week presents challenges throughout the season in the EPC.
"Biggest area of improvement we need this year is to not give up bonus points," he said. "The league has some great teams like Bethlehem Catholic, Nazareth and Parkland this year, so it'll be interesting to see how things work out."
