Girls drop first two contests of season
According to Jeff Jacksits "it was a learning experience" for Northampton's girls' basketball team.
Coach Jacksits' Konkrete Kids opened their 2014-15 season with two losses last weekend in the Owen J. Roberts Tip-Off Tournament.
Northampton lost 32-27 to Central Bucks East in opener on Friday and dropped a 54-40 decision to Conrad Weiser in the consolation game Saturday.
"We're still learning. It's just like a new team," the veteran coach said. "We missed a lot of foul shots in the first game and Conrad Weiser's girls couldn't miss at the start of the second one."
Northampton led CB East 22-19 after three periods as both teams "looked rusty," but when K-Kid sophomore Aja Blount fouled out with four minutes remaining it was all over for the Kids.
"We hit on only 7-of-22 foul shots and East outscored us 13-5 in the last period," said Jacksits. "We were a bit sloppy on offense."
No Kids wound up in double figures.
Against Conrad Weiser, the Berks County team jumped to a 21-6 lead after one period.
"They spread us out and we couldn't catch up. We got the margin down to nine points twice, but couldn't come back all the way," said Jacksits. "We must minimize our turnovers and must get used to each other. The girls tried; they really tried. We improved on our foul shooting as we made 10-of-14, but when Eckroth (junior Sophia) fouled out, it was over."
Blount, who had a game-high 18 rebounds, led the K-Kids with 14 points and Eckroth added 12.
Now the Kids must wait until Friday to open their Eastern Pennsylvania Conference schedule when they entertain Pocono Mountain West, last year's Mountain Valley Conference champions and the District 11 runner-up.
The Kids were to open their league season Tuesday night at Pleasant Valley, but bad weather forced the game to be postponed.
