Kids knock off Roughies

First-year head coach Mark Scisly entered the Northampton football program last summer in hopes of turning it around.

He began by building a culture and capped off his inaugural year by winning the traditional Catty-Northampton Thanksgiving Day game.

Scisly and the Konkrete Kids (3-9 overall, 0-8 EPC) defeated Catasauqua, 33-14, on Thanksgiving morning at a slippery Alumni Field as a Thanksgiving eve snowstorm blanketed the field with snow for the 92nd Turkey Day meeting between these two schools.

The Konkrete Kids got out to a quick lead, striking first on the opening drive of the game. Northampton pieced together a 12 play, 65-yard drive that took 4:51 of game time that resulted in seven points as junior running back Mario Delker capped off the drive with a five-yard rush down the right side.

Just a few minutes later the K-Kids increased that lead after a Andrew Szerencsits interception provided the offense with great field position that they took advantage of punching in another score on the ground, this one in the care of sophomore Jovani Datis-Cordero (13 carries, 76 yards, 2 TDs) from 10 yards out, making it 13-0 after the first quarter.

Quarterback Colin Schucker tacked on another touchdown on the ground to make it 19-0 with 9:29 left in the first half.

Northampton's offensive attack was focused on the ground game as the Konkrete Kids did not complete a pass in the game, only attempting four, as the team boasts a dual-threat backfield with Datis-Cordero and Devon Turner.

Scisly said it took many to amass 299 yards on the ground as a team in the game.

"[The conditions] really prevented us from running outside and getting the edge. We really had to keep it between the tackles. The line did a great job opening up holes and our backs ran. It was a great team effort today."

Catasauqua (3-8, 3-7 CL) fought back in the second quarter in an effort to keep the game within reach, scoring two touchdowns before half time, including a rushing score with less than 30 seconds before the break to bring the score to 19-14.

The K-Kids tacked on some cushion in the second half as Datis-Cordero ran in his second score of the day and Turner made his lone trip to the end zone early in the fourth quarter to go along with his 121 rushing yards.

"It was real exciting at the beginning," Turner said, coated in mud, about finishing the season in winning fashion. "We were all pumped up at practice. We knew it was going to be slippery and sloppy. We played through it and had a great game."

Turner had a tremendous game individually, earning him the MVP honors for Northampton in the contest. Brandon Keks won the honor for Catasauqua.

The squad notched only three wins, including this Turkey Day triumph, but this victory means a bit more, ending the season strong for Northampton.

"This series is intense. Getting this win is huge," Scisly said about snapping Catty's three-game winning streak in the series. "This series is a great tradition and to get the win here is huge for our program. It is great to send our seniors out on a high note and sets a foundation for the future."
