The traditional start to the Thanksgiving Day holiday begins in the borough Sunday with the decades-old community ecumenical program.

The Coplay Ecumenical Service, which rotates among the three borough churches, will be held on Sunday, 7 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church, South Third Street, off Coplay Street.

Participating are the congregations and pastors of St. John's Lutheran Church, St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church and Trinity United Church of Christ. The public is invited. The combined choirs from the three churches will provide the songs. Coplay Garden Club will have the church decorated with flowers.

A reminder – the borough office will be closed on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 27, and on Friday, Nov. 28.

The public works department will also be closed for the long holiday weekend.

The collection bin is being filled up and more bins are available, as residents are dropping off new toys for Coplay Recreation & Welfare's annual holiday project, Toys for Tots, in partnership with the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

The toys will go to needy girls and boys during the holidays.

This evening, Coplay Garden Club meets at 7 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church social hall, The workshop features an evergreen centerpiece, billed as a floral design workshop.

Model Railroad Explorer Post 101 will host an open house to celebrate the holidays.

The "Delaware, Lehigh & Susquehanna RR" will be operating two modular layouts constructed by members at Coplay Borough Hall, Fourth and Center streets, second floor.

The display will be open to the public noon to 4 p.m. on weekends, Dec. 13-14, 20-21 and 27-28. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

A model railroad club for teenagers, ages 14-21, is forming, with a goal of providing youth an opportunity to experience hands-on training in designing, building and operating a larger model layout.
