Girls to meet Parkland to start district playoffs

It's "win or go home" time for District 11's field hockey teams.

Northampton's Konkrete Kids are one of the 11 teams in the running to unseat Emmaus as District 11's 3A champion

Coach Kelly Backenstoe's Kids, seeded fourth, open play Saturday in a 3:30 p.m. home game against Eastern Pennsylvania Conference rival Parkland.

Northampton defeated the Trojans twice during the regular season 1-0 and 2-1 and sophomore Hallie Muffley scored the winning goal in both games.

In the 1-0 victory on Sept. 8, Muffley's second-half goal on a tip-in after Emily Henry's shot was the only goal. Then on Sept. 30, it was Muffley's goal with only 21 seconds remaining that beat the Trojans (10-6-2), who are seeded fifth in district play. Again, sophomore Henry helped by scoring the game's first goal.

Meanwhile, Northampton (12-7) will be led by senior Megan Wiest the No. 3 goal-scorer in the Kids' history with 44. Wiest, an all-EPC first team selection for the second straight year, will be joined by seniors Makenna Marhefka (second team all-EPC), Kasey Frey, Rachel Heimbach and Amber Saylor as starters against Parkland.

Goalies Shannon Dalton and Ashley Kunsman, both underclassmen, will share duties as usual while other starters will probably be juniors Claire Gogel, Meghan Hemingway, Makenzie Kistler, Kiersten Schmall and Emily Schwartz. Other Kids expected to see action are juniors Katie Wasilko, Sarah Spengler and Sydney Warner and sophomores Muffley, Henry and Devon Saul.

Meanwhile, unbeaten Stroudsburg (20-0-2), who ended Emmaus'10-year streak as league champion, will be the No. 1 seed. Emmaus (19-1-1) will be seeded second and will be trying for its' 26th straight district crown. Easton (16-3-1) will be No. 3 in front of Northampton.

District play was scheduled to begin Wednesday with Pleasant Valley (No. 9) at Nazareth (No. 8), Liberty (No. 11) at Whitehall (No. 6) and Allen (No. 10) at Pocono Mountain East (No. 7).

Saturday's quarterfinals have Parkland at Northampton, Liberty-Whitehall at Easton, Allen-PM East at Emmaus and Pleasant Valley-Nazareth at Stroudsburg.
