Soccer incident under investigation by NASD

What are being called "inappropriate comments" from Northampton boys soccer players from last Thursday's match with Nazareth are now under investigation by the Northampton Area School District.

Boys head soccer coach Craig Carvin and assistant coach Jason Melniszyn resigned on Tuesday, according to other media outlets, and NHS students could face discipline, Northampton Superintendent Joe Kovalchik told the Northampton Press Wednesday morning.

"The overall statement from the district is we don't tolerate discrimination, and we'll take action if warranted," Kovalchik said. "The administrative team will make a thorough investigation and will make a decision on the results. That's how we handle all cases."

According to Press reports, the game between the Kids and the Eagles was marred with a host of yellow cards, chippy play and a near brawl. The same could mostly be said about the teams' first matchup earlier this season between the two rival schools.

"I can't talk about individual students. Based on the information, some students could be disciplined," Kovalchik said. "Whenever there is an issue we investigate it thoroughly. We make sure all students have the same opportunities.

"I will say we've been working hand-in-hand with the Nazareth superintendent and the athletic director. It's a collaborative effort. We want to make sure we do the right thing."

The boys team fell short of the district playoffs this year and the game against Nazareth was their last of the season a 2-1 victory.

A.J. Schroettner tied the game with the Kids trailing 1-0, and double-rostered player Matthew Guindine scored the game-winning goal with under four minutes to play in overtime.

The team says goodbye to senior players: Jared Fantasia, Mike Haggerty, Matt Mottau, Zach Penrose, AJ Schroettner, Nate Treichler, and Yamil Yunez.

These players were honored before the start of the Central Catholic home game at Wolf Field, a game they lost 2-1 last Tuesday.
