Girls now have to wait for D-11 playoffs

Kelly Backenstoe is seven-for-seven as Northampton's field hockey coach.

The former Northampton High and Northwestern University goalkeeper has been in charge of the Konkrete Kids' program for seven years and her teams have gained a berth in the District 11 Playoffs each year.

This year's K-Kid team will likely be seeded fourth - behind Stroudsburg, Emmaus and Easton - based on Northampton's12-6 regular season record.

The Konkrete Kids are preparing for the District 11 quarterfinals which are slated for Oct. 25 and will have two Eastern Pennsylvania Conference all-stars leading the squad.

Senior forward Megan Wiest, who leads the Kids with 25 goals and seven assists, made the all-EPC first team for the second time, while senior Makenna Marhefka, who moved from forward to midfielder, was selected to the second team.

Meanwhile, seniors Rachel Heimbach, Kasey Frey and Amber Saylor join Wiest and Marhefka as outstanding team leaders.

"We have great balance with outstanding contributions from our juniors and sophomores," says Backenstoe. "We have had 11 different scorers and 13 players with assists throughout the season.

"Our play in the EPC's toughest division should have helped us. We lost only to Emmaus (twice in the regular season), Whitehall (twice) and Nazareth and Stroudsburg. We also lost to Emmaus a third time in the EPC playoffs and all of those games should help us in the playoffs."

The Kids, who are 12-7 counting the EPC playoff loss, are paced by Wiest, who has 44 goals in her career - third most in NHS history behind Ashley Santee (50) and Jordan Martin (59).

Top scorers behind Wiest and Marhefka are juniors Katie Wasilko and Meghan Hemingway and sophomore Hallie Muffley. Meanwhile, junior Shannon Dalton and sophomore Ashley Kunsman have been outstanding in goal, having combined for nine shutouts.

Northampton closed out regular season play last Wednesday with a 4-1 decision over Nazareth with Wiest scoring twice and Hemingway and Wasilko also adding goals.

Then the Kids lost 4-0 to Emmaus in the EPC playoffs.

Underclassmen also playing key roles for the Kids are juniors Claire Gogel, Makenzie Kistler, Emily Schwartz, Sarah Spengler and Sydney Warner and sophomores Emily Henry and Devon Saul.
