Wehr's Dam report due Oct. 9
Representatives from KCI Technologies are expected to present a report on their study of Wehr's Dam at the Covered Bridge Park recreation center near the dam 5 p.m. Oct. 9.
After the presentation, comments from the public will be received.
The KCI Technologies review was funded by a grant obtained by the Wildlands Conservancy, Emmaus.
At a meeting in June, South Whitehall commissioners agreed to allow the environmental preservation organization to seek funding for the engineering study, which would give the board advice regarding the possible removal of Wehr's Dam.
The Covered Bridge Master Plan adopted in February advocates removal of the dam.
At every commissioners' meeting since the Wildlands proposal, residents have spoken out in favor of saving the dam and have presented thousands of signatures of people who want to preserve it.
At the Oct. 1 meeting, LeRoy Schmidt came forward to express his feelings about the dam.
"I came out of retirement for Wehr's Dam," Schmidt said. "It's a worthy cause. I'll do everything humanly possible to save this dam. You don't tear history down. When it's gone, it's gone forever."
Acting Township Manager Howard Kutzler reported on South Whitehall's effort to have its own engineering firm study the dam.
He was advised by the Pidcock Co. to bring in a geotechnical specialist to evaluate the dam.
"We've taken this as far as we can," Township Engineer Ralph Russek Jr. said
Kutzler then made contact with Dan Honig, a structural engineer from West Chester who specializes in dams and geotechnical issues.
Honig was asked to submit a proposal of hours and rates for the job, including a rudimentary examination of Wehr's Dam and a review of the KCI Technologies report.
