Parkland district revises vision

Parkland School District has revised its concise vision statement, "Educating for Success, Inspiring Excellence," as part of the comprehensive plan in effect from 2015-18.

At the Sept. 16 board meeting, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Rod Troutman introduced the new mission statement identifying what the district can do, for whom it can do it, and for what benefit.

He said Parkland stakeholders will be guided in day-to-day actions by this newly prescribed mission: "Educate and empower each learner to be a meaningful contributor in a dynamic global society through the collaborative efforts of students, staff, parents and the Parkland community."

The comprehensive plan includes a listing of shared values in five categories.

First is collaboration, depicted as a partnership between families, schools, businesses and the community.

Second is safety and well-being leading to good citizenship, resilience and a sense of responsibility.

Third is curriculum, which is comprehensive and inclusive of academics, the arts and athletics.

Fourth is learning. This embrances diversity and creativity to prepare students for success in college and careers.

Fifth is instruction individualized to meet the needs of all learners delivered by staff who use professional expertise, strong character and dedication to inspire students in the learning process.

Troutman reported the comprehensive plan was developed over the past year through the work of committees at the 11 schools, along with one district-wide committee for a total of 245 participants.

The plan lists district accomplishments, concerns and challenges.

The board will vote on the plan at a future meeting, allowing time for review by the public.

It is due at the state by Nov. 30.
