Girls prep for playoffs

After two losses, the Konkrete Kids' field hockey team rebounded with a shutout victory and assured themselves of a spot in the District 11 and Eastern Pennsylvania Conference playoffs.

The 5-0 win over Allen Tuesday in a nonleague game boosted Northampton's record to 11-6 overall and clinched at least a fifth seed in the District 11 tourney.

After losing EPC games to Emmaus (8-0) and Whitehall (2-1), the Kids fell to 7-6 in the league and should easily be one of five wild-card teams in the EPC tourney. Emmaus, Stroudsburg and Easton are automatically in as division champs Emmaus in the Skyline, Stroudsburg in the Mountain and Easton in the Steel.

The K-Kids' shutout win at Allen was their ninth of the season as goalies Shannon Dalton and Ashley Kunsman once again shared duties.

Coach Kelly Backenstoe, in her seventh year as the Kids' mentor, was ecstatic with her team's ability to rebound after the Kids' losses to nemeses Emmaus and Whitehall for the second time this season.

Emmaus' top scorer - Meredith Sholder - scored two early goals and finished with five, while Tara Tracchio had two and Morgan Hill had the eighth to shatter Northampton's hopes for an upset.

In the Whitehall loss on Saturday the loss hurt terribly as Kids' five seniors - Megan Wiest, Kasey Frey, Rachel Heimbach, Makenna Marhefka and Amber Saylor - and their parents were honored before the game.

Sophomore Emily Henry's goal tied it for Northampton, but the Zephyrs' Rachel Schanauer won it on a second-half penalty stroke. Kourtney Cunningham had Whitehall's first goal.

"We played hard and well enough to win," said Backenstoe. "But it just didn't happen. But Tuesday came back with an excellent passing game, and playing on the turf helped, too."

Against Allen, Wiest scored three goals to boost her season total to 23 and her total to 41. Marhefka and Katie Wasilko also scored Wasilko, Hallie Muffley and Henry getting assists.

Northampton closed out its' regular season Wednesday with a home against Nazareth and the outcome would decide the Kids' seed in EPC action.

The league meets Thursday and will set up the pairings for the tourney, which starts Saturday.
