Northampton High School's number one singles player, Emma Angle, made it to the semifinal round of the District 11 Girls Tennis Championships last week at Saucon Valley High School.
"I was just trying to get to the quarterfinals," Angle said. "People had trouble returning my serve. I was trying to get more power on the ball and go for more winners instead of returning and waiting for my opponent."
Angle's first match resulted in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Pleasant Valley's Paola Mieles.
"I was really scared. I just wanted to get past it. After four games I was leading, and I felt more comfortable," said Angle.
The Northampton sophomore then took on Nazareth's Alison Smith, winning 6-0, 6-1.
"She's a really strong player. I started hitting harder against her, and I was moving around the court more," Angle said.
In the quarterfinals, Angle defeated Freedom's Flannery Johnston, 6-2, 7-6, (7-4).
"She became more aggressive in the second set. Then I just had to adjust to it. It was really scary. We kept going back and forth between deuce and winners," said Angle.
Angle faced Liberty's Samantha Peterson in the semifinal, losing 6-3, 6-4.
"I was hitting harder, and I knew she liked to go for winners, and I tried to move her side to side. She's a really good player, though," Angle said.
During the tournament, Northampton coach Kim Davis kept Angle positive.
"He was telling me I belonged there, and I was proving that Northampton could make it this far," said Angle. "I was relieved I went past my goal."
