District Champ!
For Northampton's Carter Test, 18 holes was not enough to crown a champion in Monday's district tournament round.
Neither was the first playoff hole.
But following the second playoff green, Test stood all alone among the rest of the Class AAA competition. After Test and Freedom's Zach Juhasz both shot a 1-over par 73 through 18 holes, both double-bogeyed the first playoff hole. On the next tee, Test's bogey was good enough to award him gold on Monday at Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort.
"On the first [playoff] hole, I made about a 12-footer to force it to the next hole," Test said. "On the first hole I went first, and I shot it into the hazard. He [Juhasz] also did the same thing.
"It hasn't really hit me like the whole effect of it yet, but I'm excited right now. I'm real excited."
At one point, things looked bleak for Test. He had a deep putt for par on the second playoff hole, while Juhasz was just a few feet from the pin for par as well. But both players missed their par putts, and Test was able to knock in the four-footer on the next shot for bogey to capture first.
"He did have the advantage," Test said. "I thought I had to make it, and I really gunned it. I had about four feet coming back down the hill. It was a poor putt."
It's not the first time Test experienced the greens of Shawnee on one of the biggest stages. Two years ago, he qualified for regionals after shooting a 114 in the 27-hole format at the district tournament, which was also at Shawnee.
Test used that familiarity to put together a solid round on the putting greens that resulted in five birdies.
"I enjoyed the course. I like the layout. Two years ago when districts was held here, I made regionals in my sophomore year. I was familiar with course, and knew I was confident on it.
"I played really well. I started off pretty slow, but I made five birdies on the day. I made a lot of putts today."
A week earlier, Test shot an 83 at the district-qualifying round at Mahoning Valley Country Club.
"My goal was to put something up there in the mid to low 70s, and just go from there," Test said, "and then let whatever happens, happens."
Emmaus' Sam Fritzinger shot a 75 to win the girls' Class AAA championship, and the Hornets also won the team title with a combined round of 315.
In Class AA competition, Central Catholic's Franca Hurtado (84) and Bethlehem Catholic's Nick Maff (74) won gold for the girls and boys, respectively. Moravian Academy (323) was the premier team in AA, outshooting Mahanoy Area by 48 strokes to win the team title.
Along with the team champions from both classifications, six boys and three girls from Class AAA advanced to regionals. In Class AA, four boys and two girls earned a spot.
