Kids lose 4th straight ahead of Emmaus tilt
Northampton's season continued to clog through adversity and tough times following last week's 35-21 defeat to Nazareth.
The K-Kids (1-4) have dropped their last four games and saw a 14-6 halftime lead against the Blue Eagles dissipate, as Nazareth (1-4) scored 29 points in the second half to register their first win of the season.
For Kids' head coach Mark Scisly, the defeat against an opponent that Northampton had a chance at victory was stinging to say the least.
"It was a tough loss," Scisly said. "We need to learn to finish games. Our offense did a good job keeping Nazareth's offense off the field in the first half. In the second half, we did not move the ball effectively and it gave them more opportunities. Nazareth had a lot more speed than us and it really showed in the second half."
Northampton quarterback Colin Schucker took the reigns behind center for the first time this year and was 3-of-8 for 18 yards through the air. However, Schucker did provide a spark on the ground, rushing 20 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns. He scored from one-yard out in the first quarter, but helped even the game at 21 in the third quarter off a 53-yard TD run.
"Obviously, he was successful on the ground last week," said Scisly of Schucker's performance. "Colin is a good, hard runner. He really sparked the ground game last week. He was our first 100 yard rusher since week one."
Nazareth took control of the game in the final stanza, as quarterback Travis Stefanik threw two of his four TD passes in the game to help push Nazareth ahead for good. Stefanik finished the night 12-of-20 for 177 yards.
The Kids travel to Emmaus (2-3) this week, as the Green Hornets are coming off a 42-33 loss to Liberty.
Both teams enter this week with plenty of similarities on the offensive side of the ball, as both like to run the football more than they throw. Emmaus quarterback Logan Kober has struggled all season, as he went 6-of-14 for 77 yards last week.
The ground game of Wyl Miller and Andrew Davidson, however, accounted for 257 yards rushing. Miller scored three TD's last week and is the Hornets major play-maker on offense.
"I think it is a good match-up, just like the Nazareth game," Scisly said of Emmaus. "If we can be more consistent with our assignments and play hard for four quarters, we will do well Friday. We just need to stop Miller and Davidson. We need to be more consistent with our blocking assigments and throw the ball more effectively on offense."
