Field hockey team clinches D-11 berth
A last-minute victory, a romp and another shutout and Northampton's field hockey team has earned another berth in the District 11 tourney.
Coach Kelly Backenstoe's Konkrete Kids are also alive for a spot in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference's championship tourney which begins next Saturday. This year's format has the Skyline, Steel and Mountain Division winners as well as five wild-card teams.
The K-Kids, now 10-4, still have four regular season games remaining and have been "sucking it up and playing big," according to Backenstoe.
Northampton played four games in the last five days and came up with three wins after dropping a 3-1 decision at Nazareth last Friday.
The Kids rebounded with a 2-0, nonleague win over Liberty on Saturday, then romped 8-0 over Pocono Mountain East on Monday before edging Parkland 2-1 at home Tuesday.
"We have five senior leaders, but it's definitely a team thing. Our goalies, our defense and our offense have stepped up their play," added Backenstoe.
Junior Meghan Hemingway had Northampton's lone goal in the loss at Nazareth, but senior Megan Wiest turned things around with both goals against Liberty with junior Katie Wasilko getting an assist.
Then, when Northampton got an 8-0 win over PM East as "everyone got into the act." Goalies Shannon Dalton (a junior) and Ashley Kunsman (a sophomore) recorded the Kids' eighth shutout in their 10 wins.
Wiest had one goal to boost her season total to 20 and her career total to 38 now the third best in the school's history.
Meanwhile, juniors Clair Gogel and Wasilko had two goals apiece and junior Sarah Spengler and sophomores Hallie Muffley and Devon Saul also scored.
Senior Makenna Marhefka who will play at East Stroudsburg University next year had two assists and Muffley one.
Tuesday when the Kids beat Parkland for the second time this year, it was sophomore Emily Henry and Muffley getting the goals with Muffley's shot coming on an assist from Wiest with only 21 seconds left in the game.
Meanwhile, seniors Kasey Frey, Rachel Heimbach and Amber Saylor have provided "outstanding leadership along with Wiest and Marhefka," says Backenstoe.
The Kids are back in action today visiting Emmaus before taking on Whitehall Saturday afternoon in the annual "Senior Parents Day" game.
