Girls, Wiest back on track

Northampton and Megan Wiest are back on track in field hockey.

The Konkrete Kids shut out Lehighton and East Stroudsburg North with Wiest scoring a school record six goals against ESN.

Wiest, a senior already committed to play next year at Drexel, had one goal in the Kids' 3-0 win over Lehighton, then boosted her season output to 17 with six in Northampton's Eastern Pennsylvania Conference 11-0 whitewash of ESN.

Wiest, who has 35 goals in her career, broke Jordan Martin's school record of five goals in a game when she scored the Kids' ninth goal against ESN early in the second half.

Her 35 career goals moves her into fourth place all-time, trailing only Emily Nonnemacher (37), Ashlee Santee (50) and Martin (59).

Coach Kelly Backenstoe praised Wiest.

"She is everything a coach could want - a team leader, aggressive and very poised. She also is capable of assisting on every shot our team takes," Backenstoe said.

Against Lehighton - a nonleague game - Wiest had a goal and an assist, while Rachel Heimbach had two goals and Shannon Dalton and Ashley Kunsman combined for the Kids' sixth shutout.

Great midfield play by Makenzie Kistler, Amber Saylor, Kasey Frey, Sydney Warner, Devon Saul and Anna Filchner supported the Kids' offense, while Kiersten Schmall and Emily Schwartz stood out on defense.

In Northampton's romp over ESN, Katie Wasilko, Makenna Marhefka, Sarah Spengler, Hallie Muffley and Meghan Hemingway also scored with Emily Henry, Marhefka (2), Frey (2), Wasilko, Heimbach and Clair Gogel getting assists.

Dalton, Kunsman and freshman Katie Gogel starred in goal.

"We focused on improving our production," said Backenstoe, whose team boosted the K-Kids' record to 7-3 following three-straight losses. "We've been playing with a higher level of energy."

The Kids return to action Friday at Nazareth and play Liberty at home Saturday morning (a nonleague game) before entertaining Parkland next Tuesday.
