Northampton boys soccer falls to Parkland

A disappointing opening 40 minutes pitted Northampton in a quick 3-0 deficit during Tuesday's Eastern Pennsylvania Conference (EPC) boys' soccer game against Parkland.

And while the Konkrete Kids seemed to have found some momentum with a goal two minutes into the second half, that early lead was too much of a cushion to spot a team of the caliber that the Trojans are.

The Trojans responded with consecutive goals six minutes apart in the second half to put to rest any thoughts of a comeback. The end result was a 5-2 victory that kept the Trojans (5-0 overall; 4-0 in EPC) unbeaten. Northampton fell to 2-3 overall (1-3 in EPC) on the season.

"I was glad that they were willing to fight this team, even though it didn't go very well in the first half," head coach Craig Carvin said. "I think honestly we played better than 3-0 for most of the half.

"Soccer is a game where if you make critical mistakes, a good team punishes you. They are a good team, and they punished us for a handful of critical mistakes."

Senior Yamil Yunez ended the Konkrete Kids' scoreless day after cleaning up a loose ball in front of the Trojans' minutes after the half got underway.

But another yellow card for the Konkrete Kids their second of three seemed to bring their frustration to light a few minutes later.

The Trojans capitalized with two second-half goals, the first coming from Peter Kwakye-Ackah that made it a 4-1 game with 24 minutes remaining. Diego Martinez then found Ahmad Awadalla deep in Northampton territory shortly after for a tally.

"Our work rate was much better," Carvin said. "It still wasn't good enough obviously, but it was much better. I'm not happy with the result, but I have hope."

Cameron Peploe gave the Konkrete Kids their second goal of the game against a Parkland defense that hadn't allowed a goal in their previous four games.

"They're a good team," Carvin said. "We're still trying to figure out what to do when we get into the final third. It's coming. Obviously we did better in the second half with generating opportunistic goals."

Tyler Madeira played a huge role in the Trojans' first two goals. After firing a deep shot that ricocheted off a Northampton defender and off the right side post for their first goal, Madeira placed a perfectly crossed ball into the middle of the field where a header by Peter Kwakye-Ackah made it 2-0.

The scoring barrage continued three minutes later after Alex Turner punched in a penalty kick after drawing a take down inside the 18.

"We don't right now have the speed to just run through a team like we did other years," Carvin said. "Right now we're going to have to take goals where we possess in the final third. We're going to have to work for our goals."

The road doesn't get any easier after facing one of the top teams in the EPC to begin the week. The Konkrete Kids travel to Emmaus on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. start.
